Original DownBeats vs. Long Stem DownBeat

DownBeats makes these wonderfully reusable high fidelity hearing protection / noise reduction earplugs.  They reduce noise evenly across frequencies for a natural sound without distorted highs or lows. Sometimes I wear earplugs to clubs because I'm no longer a young 20 year old who is able to stand the loud music anymore. Instead, I leave the clubs with a ringing in my ear and can't hear very well for awhile.  I've been so desperate that I rolled up some toilet paper and stuck it in my ear...yes...at a club. I'm a girl so it's okay, my hair covered it.  That painful ringing you hear after you've been at a raging concert or club means that you damaged your inner ear.  I want to keep my hearing till I'm so old that I need someone to help me pee.  Hopefully, you do too.  So I tried foam ear plugs at the club.  They were great, but I could not hear anyone talking to me.  Anytime my friend said something to me, they were completely muffled and I had to say "what??" about 5 times before I figured out what they were saying. Sometimes I never figured it out, so I just nodded and smiled. In comes DownBeat's ear plugs.  The kept the noise level down while still letting me hear what people were saying to me! It blew my mind. I'm no musician, even though I was forced to play the piano for 10 years, so I've never really thought about using ear protection.  But these were life changing for me.  Originally, I wanted to try them out only for sleeping because I have snoring husband.  They definitely still work for that, but I found another use for them also.  When I sleep with these on, they usually stay in my ear, but there are times that they loosened up and fell out because I move around a lot when I sleep.

Both come with anodized aluminum carrying case seals out dirt + grime and easily attaches to keys or belt-loops for ready access.  These are critical because these are made of silicon and everything sticks to them, dirt or dust.  I stick them on my keys!

They both have an average sound reduction of 18 decibels (dB).

Original vs Long Stem

As far as drawbacks go, the main one with the original ones was the small stem.  I have small-ish fingers and I had trouble holding onto it and putting it in my ear. As you can see, the long stem ness have a much longer area to hold on to. This makes putting it in and taking it out much easier.  The draw to the smaller ones is that it is more obscure when you have them in, but I don't have a problem with the longer stems being a girl and having hair to cover it.

How Downbeats Work:

Calling DownBeats “ear plugs” isn’t really the best description. That’s because DownBeats don’t stop sound in its tracks like a traditional foam ear plug. Instead, DownBeats filter sound, ensuring that the highest quality sounds are reaching your ears while the harsh noises and feedback are left out with the crowd.

DownBeats take the sound, reduce it an overall 18 decibels, and channel it acoustically into your ears, making sure you have the optimal resonance in your ears at a sustainable level.
